New York Canyonlands

[Image: Another ad for BMW – see the one featuring London – this time transforming New York City into a desert city on the Arizona-Utah border, perched on geological outcrops and overlooking slot canyons. Rumor has it, Lebbeus Woods has an image much like this...? Ad discovered via Design Bivouac, thanks to a tip from Kosmograd. View a slightly larger version].

Geoff,
All this fascination with Manhattan is not going to go over well when you move to SF.

Almost seems like some covert global warming message embeded there- everything has retained its relative location- just seems as though the waters all gone (with a wonderfully reimagined geology) - although glacial melt will (may?) cause flooding not desertification of NY. Awfully ironic....

If the scientists are saying flooding will be the result of global warming then I guess it's up to the media to throw us all askew with it's images of desertification.

Honestly though, this could be an imagining of global warming long after the flooding, when the temperature is too high to have liquid water. Thankfully, no more BMW's either.

This image reminds me of the depiction of New York in the movie The Fifth Element.

Hey Geoff,
I am surprised that you haven't blogged this yet.
When I saw it, I thought for a moment that perhaps you had written it.
It seems like the kind of thing that would really flick your wick.

Geoff, came across this reference and thought I'd confirm the rumor. I made a drawing in 1999 for Arbitare (#384). The drawing is titled "Lower Manhattan" and has an accompanying article by me speculating on Manhattan's future, "which may well have to do with some relationships that already exist, but, as it were, just beneath the surface, relationships with a wider world waiting to be revealed."
I have a .jpg of the drawing, but don't know how to send it to you!
Thanks, Lebbeus

Lebbeus, good to hear the rumors are true... I'd love to see the image.

You can send me a JPG via bldgblog (at) gmail (dot) com.

Looking forward to it.
